How to know if glow plugs need replacing?

Hey there! I've been wondering about my diesel car lately - how can I tell if my glow plugs need to be replaced? I've noticed it's been a bit harder to start on cold mornings, and sometimes there's some white smoke when it first fires up. Are there other signs I should be looking out for?
