Suspension DTCs C1200, C1210, and C1220: Diagnostic Overview and Strut Replacement Considerations

Diagnostic trouble codes C1200, C1210, and C1220 are commonly associated with chassis and suspension system faults in Hyundai, Kia, and other vehicle platforms. Depending on the manufacturer, C1200 may indicate a rear suspension height sensor or ABS/ESP input fault, while C1210 and C1220 often relate to steering angle or lateral acceleration sensor signal issues. These codes can set when a strut assembly is replaced without proper sensor calibration, when the ride height changes, or when wiring and connectors near the suspension are damaged. Before replacing any physical component, technicians should inspect the harness for breaks, check the wheel speed and ride-height sensor outputs, and perform a suspension system scan to confirm the correct fault condition. If a strut is bent or leaking, replacement is necessary. KYB and Monroe aftermarket strut assemblies are common replacements; look for parts that are manufactured under ISO 9000 or IATF 16949 quality standards. After installation, a four-wheel alignment should be performed because ride height and camber can change. Also clear all DTCs and test-drive the vehicle to ensure the sensors relearn the new suspension geometry.
