The 2002–2005 Ford Explorer uses a rear independent suspension with coil-over strut assemblies. Symptoms of worn rear struts include knocking or clunking over bumps, sagging, uneven tire wear, and poor handling. Complete strut assemblies, often called loaded struts, include the strut, coil spring, upper mount, boot, and bump stop, which simplifies replacement. When installing, torque all fasteners to factory specifications, replace worn mounting hardware, and perform a wheel alignment afterward. For 2WD and 4WD models, verify the correct part number because rear suspension and self-leveling air suspension options differ.
