Mercedes-Benz Air Suspension Rear Spring Failure: Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Replacement

Mercedes-Benz models equipped with AIRMATIC air suspension can experience rear air spring failure, particularly on GL, GLE, and GLS models. Common symptoms include the rear of the vehicle sagging, a rough or bouncy ride, noticeable air leaks, loud compressor cycling, and suspension warning messages on the dashboard. The rear of the vehicle may also drop overnight when the air spring loses pressure. Diagnosis involves visually inspecting the air spring bellows for cracks or abrasions, listening for air escaping around the spring, and scanning the suspension control module for fault codes. While DTC P0300 is a random or multiple cylinder misfire code, it can occasionally appear alongside suspension issues if wiring or connectors are damaged by a severely collapsed spring. Replacing a rear air spring assembly on current GL, GLE, or GLS models typically involves raising the vehicle, removing the rear wheel, releasing air pressure from the suspension, disconnecting the upper and lower mounting points, and installing the new spring assembly. Many technicians recommend replacing both rear air springs at the same time to maintain consistent ride height and prevent a future failure on the opposite side. After replacement, the air suspension system should be recalibrated or leveled with a diagnostic scanner.
