When a 2015-2018 Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Sierra sets DTCs such as B0001, B0012, B0013, or B0022, the clockspring (also called the spiral cable) is often at fault. The clockspring maintains continuous electrical connection between the steering wheel and the vehicle wiring while allowing the steering wheel to turn. A broken clockspring can cause airbag warnings, loss of steering wheel audio/cruise controls, and a misaligned or inoperative steering angle sensor.Replacement steps: 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait at least 2 minutes. 2. Center the front wheels and lock the steering column in the straight-ahead position. 3. Remove the driver airbag module using the proper tool through the access holes on the back of the steering wheel. 4. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the airbag and switches. 5. Remove the steering wheel retaining nut and use a puller to remove the steering wheel. 6. Remove the upper and lower steering column shrouds. 7. Remove the clockspring mounting screws and the clockspring assembly, taking care to avoid rotating it. 8. Install the new clockspring with the shipping lock in place, then remove the lock only after installation. 9. Align the clockspring to the center position if it is not pre-locked. 10. Reconnect all connectors, install the airbag, and clear DTCs with a compatible scan tool. For part number 23381966, confirm that it matches the vehicle's trim, build date, and steering wheel options such as heated wheel and audio/cruise controls. The replacement clockspring should be sourced from an OEM or trusted supplier, and the vehicle should be tested after installation. If any DTCs remain, inspect the airbag module, wiring harness, steering angle sensor, and connector terminals before replacing additional parts.
