BMW xDrive and sDrive vehicles with a transfer case (also called the transfer box) require dedicated transfer-case fluid. Using the wrong fluid can cause shudder, binding, or actuator failure. For many 2004-2016 BMW models—including the E83 X3, E70 X5, E71 X6, E84 X1, E90/E91/E92/E93 3 Series, and E60/E61 5 Series—the factory fill is BMW part number 83 22 2 282 583, commonly branded as Shell TF 0870 or DTF-1. Earlier transfer cases may take BMW part number 83 22 0 397 244. Aftermarket equivalents include Ravenol DTF-1, Febi Bilstein 44929, and Liqui Moly DTF-1. Capacity is typically 0.7 to 1.0 liter depending on the model, and the level is checked by removing the fill plug on the transfer case. BMW sometimes lists transfer-case fluid as lifetime, but many BMW specialists recommend replacing it every 50,000 to 60,000 miles, or whenever the transfer-case actuator / servo motor is replaced. The basic service procedure is: ensure the vehicle is level, remove the fill plug first, then the drain plug; let the old oil drain completely, replace the drain plug, refill through the fill hole until oil flows out, then install the fill plug with a new sealing washer. Always use a fluid that meets BMW specification DTF-1 or the exact BMW part number listed for your vehicle to avoid costly transfer-case damage.
