What a flyscreen does, and what it cannot

Buy it for chest relief and lens protection, not for a quiet helmet. The split:

• It does: throw air down and outward, so your chest and levers stop taking the blast.
• It does: shield the lens from insects and road grit.
• It cannot: lift air over your helmet — its edge sits below the instruments.

Wind protection starts about an inch above the headlight, per the Memphis Shades fitment school. A bucket-mounted edge tops out near the gauges, so the redirected air rejoins your torso.

Bracket compatibility: check the rim before you order

Two measurements close the fit question. Measure the bucket's outer diameter where the clamps land. Count the free positions there.

• No drilling: clamps grip the rim; the smoke ABS version bolts on pre-drilled.

Bar-mount screens: three clamp sizes

Step up and the mount moves to the bar. Every 19 by 17 panel sold here clamps three bar sizes:

• 7/8 in (22 mm) — most common worldwide (24MX, Lowbrow Customs).
• 1 in (25.4 mm, listed 25 mm) — the American cruiser standard.
• 1-1/4 in (32 mm) — fat bars on baggers and ape-hangers.

Measure at the clamp position, not at the grips — taper mid-bar will lie to you.

Material choice: polycarbonate, acrylic, or ABS

Match the plastic to the failure you care about. Impact picks polycarbonate. Optics pick acrylic, budget and tint pick ABS.

• Polycarbonate (PC): 10 times the impact resistance of high-impact acrylic and 20 times that of standard acrylic, per National Cycle's steel-dart and IZOD tests.
• Acrylic (PMMA): passes 90-92 percent of visible light and resists surface wear, but cracks under point loads.
• ABS: forms easily, takes dark smoke tints; the iron bracket carries the load.

Height: the cut point decides what you get

The top edge is a cut line, and it decides what you get. Three options, one bad:

• Chest level — the flyscreen: the stream rejoins your torso. Chest pressure drops, levers calm, the lens stays clean.
• Nose level, seated upright: the stream passes over the helmet. That slipstream effect is the only real wind-noise fix.
• Eye or mid-helmet level: the worst spot. You eat the shear layer and get buffeting instead of relief.

Klock Werks adds the caveat: stacking height can create turbulence behind the shield. Their fix — sight line measured seated, screen chosen below it — runs about 95 percent accurate.

Look over the edge, not through it. The PMMA clip-on deflector extension spoiler is a 0.4 cm lip that raises the effective edge.

Installation: twenty minutes, no drill

Both kits clamp rather than drill. Bring a 10 mm wrench and a screwdriver:

1. Dry-fit the brackets on the rim (or risers) and confirm they clear signal stems and wiring.
2. Set the screen and hand-start every fastener. Resistance means misalignment, not a torque problem.
3. Square the screen to the steering axis, sweep the bars lock to lock, and watch for contact.
4. Tighten criss-cross, in stages, so the bracket pads seat evenly.
5. Re-check every fastener after the first ride — vibration does the final seating.

Torque: these kits ship without a published figure. Go snug, then a small additional turn, isolators in place. Crush a fastener against bare plastic and the sheet crazes — fine cracks that grow with heat cycles.

Thickness and edge safety

Thickness is stiffness you feel at speed. The clear kit lists 3.5 mm of polycarbonate — stiff enough to hold shape without flutter — and a two-year warranty.

Edges are the safety half. Four rules:

• Factory screens arrive with finished edges. Keep them that way.
• Trim a screen and you must deburr and smooth the edge before you ride.
• Hairline cracks at a bracket hole mean the sheet is done, not "watch it."
• Run a gloved hand around every edge — anything that snags will cut skin in a slide.
