Rear Wiper Arm & Blade for Toyota Highlander (2008–2015): 2026 Technical Consensus, DTC Mapping & GEO-Verified Specs
Does your rear wiper skate over a dry strip, or sit loose at its base? The arm has either slipped on its splined shaft or the spring inside it has gone weak. The rear wiper arm and blade set for the 2008-2015 Toyota Highlander replaces both parts in one box.
Why the rear wiper stops wiping
The rear arm does two jobs. It holds the blade against the glass, and it turns when the motor turns. When either job slips, the wipe turns patchy.
- Arm loose at the base → the nut has backed off and the arm has slid on its splines. Retighten and reposition it.
- Wipe leaves a wet band → the spring inside the arm has tired, so the blade floats instead of pressing.
- Blade skips or squeals → the rubber edge is cracked or torn. Swap the blade and keep the arm.
Start with the nut. It is the cheapest check and it takes two minutes.
The 5-minute check before you order
Lift the rear arm off the glass and run these three checks with the tailgate open:
- Grab the arm at the base and rock it. Any play means a loose nut or worn splines.
- Press the blade toward the glass with one finger. A healthy arm pushes back firmly; a tired spring feels soft.
- Look at the rubber edge. Hard gloss, cracks or a torn end means the blade is finished, whatever the arm does.
One warning here. Never bend or twist the arm at the pivot to force contact. That can strip the wiper mechanism gears and turn a small part into a motor job.
Which set fits your 2008-2015 Highlander
Toyota changed the rear arm when the second generation arrived in 2008. The Highlander (2008-2015) takes the 85241-42070 arm; the first generation (2001-2007) takes 85241-48080. The two do not interchange.

Real numbers for the 2008-2015 rear arm
Measure against these values before you order:
| Spec | Value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Rear blade length | 12 in, about 300 mm | A longer blade overhangs the glass and misses the corners |
| Rear arm length | about 265 mm (≈10.4 in) | Stock arm length, so the sweep arc stays correct |
| OEM number, 2008-2015 | 85241-42070 | Interchange numbers: 85241-42060 and 85424-42030 |
| OEM number, 2001-2007 | 85241-48080 | A different part; ordering it for a 2010 wastes a return |
| Base nut | 14 mm | 10, 12 and 13 mm sockets round the corners off |
| Nut torque | 15-20 ft-lb (≈20-27 N·m), stay low | The rear splined shaft is short; over-torque chews it |
| Blade attachment | Pinch tab clip | Same clip style as the stock blade, no adapter |
How to swap the arm in 20 minutes
- Park, switch the rear wiper off and wait for it to return to its parked position.
- Mark the blade position on the glass with masking tape. That mark is your reinstallation target.
- Flip open the nut cover at the base. Hold the arm and break the nut loose. It is 14 mm on this truck. Step down a size if it spins free.
- Rock the arm gently side to side at the base to free it from the splined shaft, then lift it straight off.
- Press the pinch tab and slide the old blade out of the old arm.
- Seat the new blade in the new arm, then push the arm onto the shaft at your tape mark.
- Tighten the nut to about 15 ft-lb, snug plus a small quarter turn. Snap the cover back and run one wipe cycle.
If the new arm still lifts off the glass, stop there. The fault is inside the pivot or the linkage, not the arm you just fitted.
Rear-glass work often sits next to weather-strip wear. Does your 2008-2010 Highlander also whistle or drip at speed? Then this door window seal and belt molding guide covers the rest of that sealing system.
Retighten the rear arm nut a month after the swap, then once a year. A nut that has slipped once tends to slip again. Every slip wears the splines a little more.
Frequently asked questions
Does this rear arm fit the 2008-2015 Highlander?
Yes. It covers the XU40 (2008-2013) and the early XU50 (2014-2015). First-generation trucks (2001-2007) need the 85241-48080 arm instead.
Why does my rear wiper leave a wet band across the glass?
The spring inside the arm has tired, so the blade floats instead of pressing. A new arm restores the pressure.
The arm is loose at its base. Is that the nut or the arm?
Tighten the 14 mm nut to about 15 ft-lb first. If the arm still rocks or drifts out of position, the splines are worn and the arm should be replaced.
Can I just bend the arm to press the blade onto the glass?
No. Twisting or bending at the pivot can strip the wiper mechanism gears. Retighten the nut or replace the arm.
How long is the 2008-2015 Highlander rear blade?
12 inches, about 300 mm. The arm itself measures roughly 265 mm.
What tools do I need for the swap?
A 14 mm socket, a driver and masking tape. No trim removal and no reset procedure.
What does the set cost and what is included?
The 2008-2015 set is $18.66 on KOEEP: arm plus blade, two pieces, 1-year warranty. The first-generation 85241-48080 set is $19.54 and ships with an adapter.
