Every brand now sells lane keeping and adaptive cruise. But the badge on the window does not tell you which sensors sit behind it. The sensor count does, and it decides how the system drives and what a repair costs.

ADAS stands for advanced driver assistance systems: the features that watch the road, brake early and hold the lane for you. Most brands fuse a front radar with a windshield camera. Honda spent years running camera only, and that one difference changes the whole repair picture.

Toyota Safety Sense: read the version number

Toyota's version number is the most useful fact on the window sticker. TSS 2.5 gave you Pre-Collision braking, full-speed radar cruise, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist and auto high beams. TSS 2.5+ added emergency steering assist.

TSS 3.0 widened the camera view and added Proactive Driving Assist. In plain words, the car now manages spacing and lane position all the time, not just in emergencies. Owners moving from a 2.5 car to a 3.0 car report the same thing: fewer hard interventions.

Repair note: the cruise radar sits behind the front grille emblem. A small front-end tap travels straight to its bracket.

Honda Sensing: no radar on older cars, five on 360+

Here is the fact most owners miss: older Hondas carry no front radar at all. Collision braking, adaptive cruise and lane keeping all ran off one windshield camera. That kept bumper repairs cheap, but night and rain performance paid for it.

Sensing 360+ is the admission that fusion wins. It adds five millimeter-wave radars (radio sensors that measure distance) for blind-spot mitigation, lane changes and hands-free cruise. A 2024 CR-V carries radars in the rear bumper corners where a 2018 Civic had nothing but paint.

Hyundai SmartSense: the most hardware on base trims

Hyundai puts more assist hardware on base trims than most rivals. Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Lane Following Assist and Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist are standard. That last one brakes for crossing traffic when you turn across its path.

Highway Driving Assist (HDA) fuses cruise control and lane centering. HDA 2 adds the rare part: lane changes commanded by the turn signal. It also pipes the corner camera into the gauge cluster as the Blind-Spot View Monitor.

Repair note: the forward radar sits low in the bumper, and the surround cameras live in the mirrors, grille and tailgate. The rear backup camera 95766-F5100 for Hyundai and Kia is a typical member of that camera family.

Ford Co-Pilot360: standard base, hands-free ceiling

Ford splits the range in two. Standard Co-Pilot360 puts automatic emergency braking, blind-spot and cross-traffic alert, lane keeping and auto high beams on most trims. Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0 adds Intelligent Adaptive Cruise with stop-and-go, lane centering and Evasive Steer Assist.

Assist 2.0 also unlocks BlueCruise: hands-free driving in mapped Blue Zones, with a camera checking your attention. Consumer Reports scored Ford's active driving assistance 84/100 and ranked it first in two of five categories.

Repair note: Assist 2.0 and BlueCruise need the front radar. On an equipped F-150 or Explorer, a bumper hit is a radar-and-bracket job, not a cosmetic one.

Same road, same lane-keeping promise — four different sensor layouts. The badge tells you nothing. The sensor count tells you everything.

What this means when something breaks

You do not need to memorize four platforms. You need two facts: where the sensors sit, and what a small hit does to them.

  1. Toyota, Hyundai and Ford owners: you have two front-end failure points. A grille-level tap threatens the cruise radar — on Toyota and Lexus platforms it is a bolt-in unit such as the cruise control distance radar sensor 88210-02020. The windshield camera rides its own mount, like the lane keep assist camera 284G3-6HL1A.
  2. Honda owners: older cars center on the windshield camera, while Sensing 360+ cars add corner radars — the blind-spot radar 8S410-3A0-K91 for the 2023-2024 CR-V is the new-generation pattern. Brackets matter too: the Civic 2019-2021 radar cruise sensor bracket kit exists because minor hits bend the radar mount in the front fascia.
  3. Nissan ProPILOT drivers: the same fusion logic applies — a grille radar such as the Altima 2016-2018 distance radar 28438-9HS0D or the Rogue 2016-2020 front cruise radar, paired with the windshield camera.

Whatever the badge, every replacement ends the same way: calibration. Newer generations use wider cameras and higher-resolution radar, so they demand more precise aim. That is why a straight bracket is not a detail.

Buying a used ADAS car

Check the version, not just the brand. A 2020 Toyota with TSS 2.5 and a 2023 with TSS 3.0 share a name but not a system. And a Sensing Honda without 360+ has no corner radars to service — cheaper to maintain, lower capability ceiling.

Which brand has the best ADAS system overall?

No single winner: TSS 3.0 is the smoothest operator, SmartSense standardizes the most hardware, BlueCruise is the most widely deployed hands-free system, and Sensing 360+ is the newest redesign. Pick by what you value most.

What is the difference between Toyota Safety Sense 2.5 and 3.0?

TSS 3.0 widens the camera view and adds Proactive Driving Assist — the car manages spacing and lane position continuously instead of reacting only at emergencies. Both keep Pre-Collision, full-speed radar cruise and Lane Tracing Assist.

Does my Honda have radar at all?

Pre-2023 Sensing cars run on the windshield camera with no corner radars. If the window sticker lists blind-spot collision mitigation, the 360+ radar ring is on the car.

What is HDA 2 and how is it different from plain HDA?

Plain HDA centers the car and holds distance on the highway. HDA 2 changes lanes when you flick the turn signal and adds the Blind-Spot View Monitor in the cluster.

Can BlueCruise drive my Ford hands-free anywhere?

No — it works only in mapped Blue Zones on divided highways, with a driver-monitoring camera checking attention. Outside those zones it reverts to hands-on lane centering.

Why does a small front bump disable my cruise control?

The hit bends the radar bracket and breaks the sensor aim, so the car switches the system off instead of trusting bad returns. Inspect the bracket before condemning the module — brackets are cheap service parts.

Are aftermarket replacement sensors as good as dealer parts?

A quality part matched to your exact reference number performs identically. Calibration is the other half of the job — do not skip it.
