Engine Oil Filter Housing O-Ring Kit for 2014-22 Dodge Ram Jeep Chrysler 3.6L — 2026 Technical Consensus & OEM Compliance Guide
Oil is weeping down the back of your 3.6L Pentastar and the filter itself is dry. That points at the oil filter housing — the molded block that holds the filter and the oil cooler. Its O-rings (the round rubber seals under the cap and at the cooler lines) go hard with heat and stop sealing.
Start with the cheap fix. The oil filter housing O-ring kit for 2014-2022 Ram, Jeep and Chrysler 3.6L replaces the OE 68191356AA rings for $23.06. Rings are the right repair as long as the housing body is still sound. This guide shows you how to tell the difference in a few minutes.
Where the oil actually comes from
One housing, three leak points. Find yours before you order anything.
- Under the filter cap → the cap ring has gone hard or flat. Cheapest fix in the kit.
- At the cooler line quick-connects → the small line seals weep. The same kit covers them.
- Out of the housing body itself → the plastic has cracked. Rings will not help here.
Check the coolant bottle before you buy anything. Brown streaks or a milky film mean oil and coolant are mixing inside the housing. That is an internal pinhole, and it ends the rings-versus-housing debate.
Ring kit or full housing: decide in two minutes
Match your symptom to a line and order once:
- Rings hard, glossy or flattened, housing surface sound → ring kit, about an hour of work.
- Cap threads cracked or stripped → a new cap, ideally the aluminum upgrade.
- Oil in the coolant, or coolant in the oil → complete housing assembly, not rings.
- Leak only at the filter adapter ports → the adapter ring set, same price range.
Dealers quote around $1,200 for the full housing job on these engines, which is why owners try rings first. Rings are the correct first move only while the housing body still holds pressure. Once oil and coolant share a passage, the housing is done.

All four ship with a 1-year warranty. Bigger engine hardware for the same Pentastar engines sits in the engines and engine parts collection.
How to replace the rings: about an hour
Tools: a 3/8 in ratchet, a 1-1/4 in (24 mm) cap socket, 10 mm and 13 mm wrenches, and a plastic pick.
- Work on a cold engine. Spray the housing down with brake cleaner so fresh drips stand out.
- Unscrew the filter cap and lift the old filter out.
- Hook the old cap ring out with the pick. Wipe the groove clean and dry.
- Coat the new ring in clean engine oil and seat it evenly in its groove.
- Release the cooler line quick-connects and swap the small line seals.
- Fit a new filter and torque the cap to 25 N·m (18 lb-ft). Overtightening is what cracks these housings in the first place.
- Run the engine to full temperature and recheck the housing for drips. Top up the oil.
Removing the whole housing adds three numbers. Block bolts go to 12 N·m (about 106 in-lb), the smaller ones to 4 N·m, cooler line fittings to 28 N·m. Plan on roughly 5.5 qt of fresh 0W-20, and hand that bigger job to a shop if you have never pulled a housing before.
Pair the job with a fresh filter instead of reusing the old one. Not sure which media to buy? The filter technology guide explains what the newer filter media actually does inside these engines.
When the housing itself is finished
Oil in the coolant bottle means the thin divider inside the housing has pinholed. Oil and coolant now share a passage, and running the engine like that can wipe the bearings. Replace the complete housing assembly. No ring kit fixes this.
The other dead-housing sign is a visible crack or a cap thread that will not hold torque. Heat cycles warp and embrittle the molded body over the years. An aluminum cap and filter upgrade exists for exactly this reason — aluminum does not strip the way tired plastic does.
Same engine, second known weak point: 2011-2015 Pentastar engines also wear timing chains and VVT gears faster. A cold-start rattle or cam timing codes point there. The timing chain and VVT gear tool kit for 2011-2015 3.6L Pentastar is the parts-and-tools set for that separate job ($282.16).
Look at the housing at every oil change. Wipe the underside of the cap boss and both cooler line joints with a white rag. Oil film on a clean rag means a seal is starting to let go, and rings are still cheap at that stage. Brown sludge in the coolant bottle means stop driving and book the housing job.
