What the compressor actually does

Take the pump out of that loop and nothing moves. The refrigerant sits still, and the vents keep blowing warm.

5. Align the pulley so the belt runs true.
6. Evacuate the system: a vacuum pump pulls the air and moisture out before the refrigerant goes back in.

Steps 1 and 6 are the shop steps. The rest is mechanical work around the front of the engine, once the car is safely supported.

Compressor alone, or compressor plus condenser?

For a straight compressor failure on a 2012-2014 truck, the compressor alone is the fix. That is why the direct-fit 2.4L unit is sold on its own.
