  • P0299, underboost. A boost leak leads — a cracked pipe or a loose clamp in the charge path, the pipes and cooler that carry compressed air to the engine. The wastegate actuator is second, the turbo third.
  • A siren whine that rises with boost. This one convicts the turbo directly. It is the rotating group — the spinning shaft inside — running in worn clearance. Pull the inlet pipe and feel the shaft for play.
  • Blue-gray smoke. Oil is slipping past the turbo seals and burning in the exhaust. Check the oil drain for a blockage first, or the new unit smokes too.
