880/892 LED Fog Light Bulbs: Fitment & Beam Guide
Shopping for an 880-series LED fog bulb and drowning in look-alike numbers? Start with the 2-piece 880/890/892/893 LED fog bulb set (6500K white). Then read the four rules below before you order anything else.
The short version: every bulb in this family fits the same socket. Your housing type and your local weather decide which bulb to buy. Browse all of them in the lighting and lamps collection.
One base, three wattage classes
The numbers in this family are not random. They mark three power levels on one platform: the PG13 base, a push-and-twist socket used by fog lamps. That shared base is why one LED kit covers several bulb numbers.

Watch out for one number: 881. It draws similar power but twists into the socket differently. An 880 LED will not seat in an 881 socket, and the reverse is true too.
Everything else on PG13 is a physical match. That is how one listing, the CSP LED set covering 880/890/892/893/899 in 3000K amber, can honestly cover five numbers. One caveat stands: a 27 W housing was never built around 50 W of heat.
What an LED swap actually changes
A halogen bulb makes light with one glowing filament, and your housing was shaped around that exact spot. An LED bulb swaps the filament for chips. Three things follow from that:
- Light output. About 1,500–2,000 lumens per pair — a lumen is the raw amount of light — against 1,200–1,500 from a stock 27 W halogen. The 2000-lumen 880/892 amber pair is typical.
- Chip position. If the chips do not sit where the filament sat, the beam goes wrong: a hot blob where it should be wide, glare above where the cutoff should be.
- Current draw. An LED pulls a fraction of the halogen current, and some body computers read that as a dead bulb.
That last point is the CANbus problem — the wiring network that watches every bulb in your car. It reads low current as a burned-out bulb. The cure is built-in load resistors or add-on decoders, covered in the CANbus LED fog bulb technical consensus guide.
Would rather skip that entirely? The AUXITO 880/881/893 conversion bulbs (B3F series) are a simple 6500K white option. Same socket, same idea, no decoder to think about.
Legality: fog lights are the exception
Start with the rule that decides where these bulbs may go. Quality makers state their LED fog bulbs are legal in the USA for fog light use only. That phrase rests on three facts:
- Headlights are certified as a housing-plus-bulb system under FMVSS 108, the US lighting standard. Drop an LED bulb into a halogen headlight housing and that approval is gone — NHTSA has said so plainly.
- Fog lamps answer to their own SAE rule, the f-marking molded on the lens. A low, wide, aimable beam below your sight line tolerates an LED source.
- Physics ignores both rules. Chips in the wrong spot wreck the beam no matter what the law says.

White or amber? Let the weather pick
Color temperature is measured in Kelvin (K). Low numbers look yellow, high numbers look white-blue. Fog punishes the high numbers.
Water droplets scatter short wavelengths far more than long ones. A 6500 K beam is heavy in blue-end energy, so it walls up into a glow exactly when you need it most. A 3000 K amber beam pushes more of its light onto the road.
- Mostly clear nights, or DRL-style running lights: pick 6500 K white — maximum contrast on dry pavement. The 6500K white 880-series set is this camp.
- Regular fog, heavy rain, snow country: pick 3000 K amber — the 2000 lm amber pair or the 50 W 3000K amber-yellow CSP set. The dry-night penalty is modest; the gain in soup is not.
Two cars can take the same 892 bulb and behave differently after the swap. A projector fog housing hides chip-position errors. A plain reflector shows every one of them.
So if your fogs are reflector-type, buy a bulb with filament-position-matched chips — CSP (chip-scale package) layouts, 360° emission claims. Skip the cheapest two-chip designs.
Then run the wall test. Park 25 feet from a wall: you want a wide flat pool with a soft top edge, not a hot center blob with light climbing above it.
Frequently asked questions
Are 880 and 892 bulbs the same thing?
Yes for fitment — both are 27 W halogen bulbs on the PG13 base, and 890 matches them exactly. The separate numbers are catalog labels, not different parts.
Can I use an 893 bulb where an 880 came out?
It will seat, because both use the PG13 base, but the 893 is a 37.5 W bulb in wiring sized for 27 W. For a halogen-to-halogen swap, match the wattage class printed on the old bulb.
Are LED fog light bulbs street legal?
In the USA, quality makers state their LED bulbs are legal for fog light use only. The same bulb in a halogen headlight housing is the compliance problem NHTSA guidance addresses; rules elsewhere vary, so check locally.
Why do my LED fog bulbs flicker or throw a bulb-out warning?
The LED draws a fraction of the halogen current, so the body computer reads it as a dead bulb. Use bulbs with built-in CANbus load resistors or add-on decoders.
Should I choose 6500K white or 3000K amber for fog?
Regular fog, rain or snow: amber. Clear nights and the modern look: white. Many drivers run amber fogs alongside stock headlights.
My new LED fog bulbs look dim — what is wrong?
Check three things in order: flip the bulb 180° (most LED bulbs are polarity-sensitive), clean the ground and socket contacts, then inspect the lens. A yellowed, hazy lens is the real bottleneck — no bulb fixes that.
How long do LED fog bulbs last compared to halogen?
Roughly ten times longer: halogens in this class last a few hundred hours, while quality LEDs are rated in the tens of thousands. Heat is the limit, so a sealed, airless housing ages the bulb faster than its rating.
