The A/C pressure sensor (a transducer) sits on the condenser, passenger side. Three wires: 5-volt reference, low reference, and a signal that rises with high-side pressure.

Your ECM uses that one signal twice: it permits the clutch and it commands the radiator fan.

  • Warm air, compressor silent → pressure signal, wiring, or an empty system.
  • Warm air with the clutch engaged → pumping or airflow. The gauges decide.
  • Cold that returns after a restart → connector, heat soak, or bulletin PIE0304A.
  • No check engine light → normal. The ECM stores Failure Records and disables the clutch.

One break: the sensor threads into a Schrader port, so you can swap it without recovering refrigerant. Make it your last cheap test, not your first.

P0530, P0532, P0533: the numbers that matter

These trip points come from GM's three-wire documentation. Treat them as anchors; your Cruze runs the same architecture with its own calibration.

Each code lands somewhere different, and the landing spot decides your next test.

  • P0532 (signal near 0 V) → open signal wire, short to ground, failed sensor, or empty system.
  • P0533 (signal near 5 V) → short to 5-volt reference, lost low reference, failed sensor, or over-pressure.
  • P0530 (implausible or unstable) → usually the connector: corrosion, spread terminal, or chafed harness.

If the code points at wiring: low reference to ground under 10 ohms, 5-volt reference 4.8-5.2 V key on, and a fused jump from signal to reference should push the scan reading above 4.90 V.

A failed sensor costs a fraction of compressor money. Match the number on your old sensor — the 22664328 family is common — against this standalone GM A/C refrigerant pressure sensor.

A code names a circuit condition, not a part. P0532 says the ECM sees an empty loop or a dead wire. The gauges and the ohmmeter decide which.

The five-minute clutch test

This test splits the diagnosis in half. Engine running, command the A/C on (max blower, recirculate, plus a scan-tool command if you have one), then listen at the compressor.

  1. Sharp click, then warm air → the permit chain, coil, and clutch are alive. Go to the gauges.
  2. Silence with battery voltage at the clutch terminal → the coil or the clutch gap has failed.
  3. No voltage at the terminal → the command is withheld upstream: relay, fuse, or pressure permit.
  4. Feed the clutch from the battery through a fused jumper. It engages → command path fault. Still silent → dead coil.

Read the coil with an ohmmeter: MACS puts a healthy coil in the low single-digit ohms; an open circuit is a dead coil. If the coil is alive but the clutch will not pull in, check the gap.

Clutches of this class run 0.3-0.6 mm, with some texts quoting 0.4-0.8 mm; no PXC14 figure is published, so treat the class range as your pass/fail band. Read the gauges in three tiers

Gauge work answers three questions; the first comes with the engine off after an overnight sit.

  • Static: both needles equal, near 120 psi on the hottest days. Both in vacuum → empty loop; find the leak first.
  • Running at 2500 rpm, fans on: high side near 150 psi plus ambient °F. About 230 psi on an 80°F day is normal; 300 psi means airflow or an overcharge.
  • Both sides low at speed: undercharge; find the leak, never just top off.
  • Both sides high with warm vents: the condenser cannot reject heat, or the charge is heavy.
  • Low side in vacuum, high side soft: a restriction, or a compressor that no longer pumps. The compressor becomes the suspect.

GM bulletin 18-NA-260 covers refrigerant loss through the condenser process plug on 2016-2019 Cruze builds; this generation's slow leak has an inspectable cause before you blame other seals.

Tier three is the cross-check most diagnoses skip: compare the gauges to the scan tool's pressure reading; agreement proves the sensor honest, while a frozen 0 psi reading with gauges at 100 condemns the sensor or wiring.

Use the verification window as the pass/fail line: a signal that cannot sweep smoothly from 0.1 V to 4.90 V has failed.

Order the right part: VIN, RPO, 39067789

Now match the part to the car. The 1.4L turbo in the 2016-2019 Cruze is the LE2, and it puts the letter "M" in the eighth VIN position.

The generation split is the one trap. The 2012-2015 Cruze sedan 1.4L uses the 3913319 clutch family — sold as its own compressor with clutch for the 2012-2015 Chevrolet Cruze 1.4L — a different generation, not a substitute. Its loop holds 20 oz, not your 17.

Technician note: the intermittent complaint

The hardest jobs work when the car arrives; GM bulletin PIE0304A covers intermittent temperature control on this generation. The usual culprit is electrical: a corroded or spread-terminal condenser connector creates the warm-cold-warm pattern that gets a healthy compressor ordered. Wiggle-test it; a stuttering reading condemns the connection, not the pump.

Heat soak matters too: a sensor that drifts high after thirty minutes of traffic will not reproduce on a cold start. Record Failure Records before clearing.

My 2017 Cruze stores P0532 and the compressor never engages. Is the compressor finished?

No. P0532 also fits an open wire, a bad connector, a failed sensor, or an empty system. Verify the signal, then gauge the car.

Where is the A/C pressure sensor on a 2016-2018 Cruze?

On the condenser, passenger side of the radiator pack. It sits on a Schrader port, so no refrigerant recovery is needed.
